More Than Nothing

New Blog

So I’ve finally gotten around to sorting out a new blog. There were several reasons for wanting a change, it’s just taken me a while to get around to sorting it all out.

The old host, whilst having the benefit of being free, that was it’s only real benefit. The biggest problem was not being able to correctly setup the DNS servers so the URLs looked right.

It’s now kindly being hosted on a friends server, which has the benefits of being both free and allowing me to setup the DNS stuff.

Because it’s a Linux server I couldn’t use the same ASP.NET blog engine I was using before. I chose WordPress (after a couple of attempts to write my own) simply because it’s popular, and thus well supported and an easy choice.

Migration was fairly simple. I exported the posts from the old blog, installed a plugin to import them into WordPress, then spent a day or so fixing up some of the export/input errors, fixing URLs and adding Google Syntax Highlighter to all the old posts with code.

The theme is modified from plainscape. Over the past few months I’ve made several attempts to design a blog, and thus its theme, from scratch. It’s usually started fairly well, but then I got bogged down in the details. This time, using plainscape as a base meant a lot of the details were already done, and I could just tinker with the bits I didn’t like. Fortunately it was already pretty similar to designs I had done before, so it didn’t take a lot to turn it into almost a clone of my previous design.

Now I don’t have a blog I feel quite so embarrassed to point people to.
